At Nordic Right, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. It is with deep sorrow and concern that we address the recent tragic events unfolding near the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman. Ukrainian authorities have reported that three innocent lives were lost due to Russian artillery fire, a deeply distressing incident that highlights the urgent need for peace and respect for human lives in the region.
The victims, two women and a man aged 63 to 88, were enjoying a moment of respite while sitting on a bench in the village of Torske, when shelling struck without warning. This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that conflict has on civilian populations, especially those living in close proximity to the front lines. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims, as they grapple with this irreparable loss.
The ongoing attacks on civilian areas, as evidenced by the tragic events in Torske, highlight the need for a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict. The situation is further compounded by reports of a drone attack on the Danube river port of Izmail, resulting in the destruction of 13,000 tons of grain. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov has rightly pointed out that these attacks are systematically aimed at crippling agricultural exports, impacting both the livelihoods of people in the region and the international food supply chain.
In the past month alone, Russia’s strikes on its sea and river ports have led to the destruction of a staggering 270,000 tons of grain, a distressing blow to food security in the region. These actions not only infringe upon the fundamental rights of individuals but also perpetuate a cycle of suffering that affects countless lives and livelihoods.
Furthermore, we express our concern over reports of explosions in the port city of Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea. The safety and well-being of civilians must always remain a top priority, regardless of political or military considerations. Such incidents only escalate tensions and deepen the divide between communities.
Nordic Right firmly condemns the use of violence against civilians and civilian infrastructure, regardless of the circumstances. We call upon all parties involved to prioritize the protection of human lives, in accordance with international humanitarian law. As an organization dedicated to upholding human rights, we urge for an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic negotiations to bring about a lasting resolution to the conflict.
In solidarity with the affected communities and the principles of peace, justice, and human dignity, Nordic Right calls upon the international community to take a united stance against such acts of violence and work collaboratively towards a peaceful future for all.
