At Nordic Right, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. Today, we are deeply concerned and condemn in the strongest terms the ongoing situation involving the French Ambassador to Niger, Sylvain Itte. President Emmanuel Macron’s recent statement about Ambassador Itte’s plight is alarming, and we call for an immediate resolution to this crisis that respects human rights and international norms.
President Macron revealed on Friday that Ambassador Itte is effectively living as a hostage within the French embassy in Niger, enduring conditions where food deliveries have been blocked by military rulers. This revelation paints a distressing picture of the ambassador being compelled to rely on “military rations” for sustenance, a situation that raises serious concerns about his well-being and rights.
The President’s words are clear and unambiguous: “As we speak, we have an ambassador and diplomatic staff who are literally being held hostage in the French embassy.” This unacceptable situation has arisen in the context of Niger’s recent political turmoil, with military leaders directing Ambassador Itte to leave the country after the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
Despite a 48-hour ultimatum for Ambassador Itte to depart issued in August, the French government has declined to comply or recognize the legitimacy of the military regime. This ongoing standoff has led to a dire humanitarian situation within the embassy premises.
France, along with most of Niger’s neighbors, has unequivocally condemned the coup and recognizes President Bazoum as the legitimate authority. President Macron emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “He cannot go out, he is persona non grata, and he is being refused food.”
In response to these distressing developments, Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna affirmed that Ambassador Itte is diligently working and will remain in his post for as long as Paris deems necessary. The ambassador’s continued presence is of immense value to France and plays a crucial role in maintaining diplomatic contacts during this challenging period.
Nordic Rights stands with those advocating for a peaceful and humane resolution to this crisis. We call on all parties involved to prioritize human rights, engage in dialogue, and work toward a peaceful solution that respects the dignity and well-being of all individuals affected by this situation.
The Sahel region south of the Sahara has witnessed a troubling trend of coups replacing elected governments in recent years, affecting the lives of countless individuals and communities. In this challenging context, we reiterate our commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, both in the Nordic Region and worldwide.
Nordic Rights remains vigilant, ready to collaborate with international partners, and unwavering in our dedication to the principles of human rights and justice.
