At Nordic Right, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. Today, we strongly condemn the recent Israeli strikes on Syrian territory, which have once again violated the principles of human rights and international agreements, particularly the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria.
According to reports, these airstrikes targeted “two temporary structures” used by the Syrian army near the demarcation line, leading to a further escalation of tensions in the region. An AFP photographer on the scene witnessed an Israeli tank firing at least two shells, resulting in smoke billowing from a Syrian position near the demarcation line, visible from the Druze village of Majdal Shams on the Israeli-occupied side.
Israel’s capture of the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967 and its subsequent annexation of the territory in a move not recognized by the United Nations remain deeply contentious issues. Such actions directly undermine the stability and peace of the region and contravene international law.
Furthermore, it is disheartening to see that these attacks come on the heels of an Israeli drone strike that killed two members of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad earlier on the same day. This act, once again, highlights the ongoing cycle of violence and its devastating impact on innocent civilians in the region.
Nordic Rights remains deeply concerned about the repeated Israeli strikes on Syrian territory during the more than a decade of conflict in Syria. These strikes have often targeted Iran-backed forces, Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian army positions. It is crucial to emphasize that such military actions not only violate international agreements but also perpetuate the suffering of the Syrian people who have endured unimaginable hardships throughout this prolonged conflict.
In light of these recent events, we call upon all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek peaceful diplomatic solutions to the longstanding conflicts in the region. We also urge the international community to take immediate action to ensure that human rights are upheld, and international agreements are respected.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the 1973 war, it is vital to remember the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Golan Heights region. The presence of a United Nations force tasked with monitoring a ceasefire on the Golan Heights emphasizes the international community’s commitment to peace.
Nordic Rights stands in solidarity with all those affected by the recent violence, and we reiterate our call for a peaceful resolution to the conflicts that continue to plague this region. It is our hope that through dialogue and cooperation, we can work towards a future where human rights are upheld, and peace prevails for the sake of all people living in the region.
