At Nordic Rights, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. We are deeply concerned about the ongoing impunity and the horrific violations of human rights in the Darfur region of Sudan. Today, we strongly condemn the reported atrocities and human rights abuses that have taken place, specifically the actions allegedly committed by Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as “Ali Kushayb.”
Ali Kushayb, an alleged senior commander of the Sudanese Janjaweed militia, has been charged with 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. According to Human Rights Watch, the charges relate to a series of grave offenses, including mass rape, killings, and other abuses, which are believed to be part of widespread and systematic attacks on civilian populations that may constitute crimes against humanity.
Kushayb is accused of committing these heinous crimes between August 2003 and April 2004, including murder, attempted murder, pillaging, rape, torture, and intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population in the Darfur region of Sudan. The conflict that unfolded in 2003 has left a devastating impact, costing the lives of at least 300,000 civilians and displacing nearly three million individuals.
Nordic Rights acknowledges that the ICC has taken action by bringing Kushayb to trial. However, his plea of non-guilty and the ongoing issue of impunity in Sudan demand our continued attention and advocacy.
The alleged crimes and the ongoing conflict in the region have fueled human rights abuses and further destabilized Sudan. The formation of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from the Janjaweed militia has added to the humanitarian crisis, with new allegations of war crimes emerging.
In a speech to the UN Security Council, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan emphasized that the ICC’s mandate regarding crimes within its jurisdiction remains ongoing. He stated that the ICC will investigate any individuals found to be committing crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide within their jurisdiction.
Nordic Rights calls for accountability for all individuals responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan. We stand with victims and human rights organizations, advocating for justice to prevail in Sudan and an end to impunity. The case of Ali Kushayb should serve as a reminder of the importance of holding those responsible for atrocities accountable.
Elise Keppler from Human Rights Watch underscores the urgency of this matter, highlighting that impunity has been a major force in Sudan, which continues to fuel abuses seen today.
Niemat Ahmadi, founder and president of the Darfur Women Action Group, emphasizes the importance of accountability as a means to restore dignity and justice to the people of Sudan.
The International Criminal Court has taken significant steps in addressing these crimes by opening at least six cases and issuing seven arrest warrants in connection with alleged crimes committed in Darfur. Ali Kushayb, who voluntarily surrendered to the court in June 2020, is currently the only case to have reached trial.
Nordic Rights reiterates its commitment to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights. We call upon the international community to join us in condemning these crimes and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. Impunity must not be allowed to prevail.
