At Nordic Right, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. Our organization stands in unwavering support of individuals facing crises that threaten their basic human rights. It is with grave concern that we address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Avdiivka, Ukraine, where innocent civilians endure extreme hardship and danger.
The residents of Avdiivka, Ukraine, have been trapped in a nightmare of violence and fear. Russian missiles have shattered their town, and families like Hanna’s are struggling to survive as they face unimaginable challenges. Hanna, desperate to escape the violence, is torn between her own safety and the well-being of her elderly mother, who refuses to leave their home. Her mother’s age and physical limitations make her vulnerable to the harsh conditions and constant threats.
Avdiivka, a strategically important and fiercely contested town in eastern Ukraine, has become a battleground in the long-standing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion last February, the town’s population has dwindled from over 30,000 to just over 1,000. The recent escalation of violence has intensified the suffering of those who remain, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky describing the situation as “particularly tough.”
The town’s infrastructure has been decimated, and its residents live under near-constant bombardment and air strikes. Windows and doors are broken, and essential services have collapsed. The situation is dire, and the lack of safe shelter makes every day a struggle for survival.
For those who remain, access to essential supplies and even the most basic necessities has become a dangerous endeavor. Venturing out to the last remaining shop in town is a life-threatening mission, as there are no safe spaces to seek shelter in case of an attack.
At Nordic Right, we denounce the targeting of innocent civilians and the destruction of their homes and communities. We call for an immediate end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Avdiivka and the broader region. The suffering of the people of Avdiivka is a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect and uphold human rights.
The residents of Avdiivka are left with few options for safety, and many have sought refuge in government-built facilities known as Points of Invincibility, where they can access food, warmth, power, and some measure of refuge. However, these facilities are stretched to their limits, and the situation remains dire.
Nordic Right calls upon the international community to take immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Avdiivka. We implore all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and to work toward a lasting and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Our hearts go out to the people of Avdiivka, and we stand in solidarity with them during this time of extreme hardship. The human rights violations and suffering in Avdiivka are an affront to the principles of dignity and justice, and we will continue to advocate for a peaceful and humane solution to this crisis.
