Nordic Rights Condemns the Urgent Evacuation of Romanian, Ukrainian, and Moldovan Nationals from Gaza

At Nordic Rights, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. We are deeply concerned by the urgent situation unfolding in Gaza, where the lives and safety of Romanian, Ukrainian, and Moldovan citizens have been jeopardized.

Today, Romania’s and Ukraine’s Foreign Ministries announced a joint effort to evacuate their citizens and family members from Gaza into Egypt on November 7, 2023. Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, reported that 103 Romanian citizens and their family members, as well as 101 Ukrainians, are among those awaiting evacuation. Notably, 51 Moldovan nationals are also part of this evacuation mission, emphasizing the international collaboration to ensure the safety of these individuals.

Reports indicate that some 350 Romanian citizens are currently residing in Gaza, with approximately 260 of them urgently requesting evacuation. Additionally, Ambassador Korniychuk stated that around 367 Ukrainians will be repatriated through Israel as part of this operation.

The safety and well-being of every individual, regardless of their nationality or location, is of paramount importance. We applaud the joint efforts of Romania and Ukraine to ensure the safe evacuation of their citizens in a region facing ongoing instability and uncertainty. It is a testament to the power of international collaboration and diplomacy in times of crisis.

Nordic Rights strongly condemns any situation that puts the lives of innocent civilians in danger and applauds the swift actions taken by Romania, Ukraine, and Moldova to evacuate their citizens from the troubled region. We call upon all relevant parties to prioritize the safety and welfare of these individuals and to ensure a smooth and secure evacuation process.

We also urge the international community to remain vigilant and ready to support any humanitarian efforts aimed at safeguarding the rights and lives of those in need, irrespective of their nationality. In times of crisis, it is essential to come together as a global community to protect and uphold the fundamental principles of human rights and dignity.
