At Nordic Right, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. It is with profound concern and condemnation that we address the recent events unfolding in Ukraine, where Russia conducted what Ukrainian officials have described as the largest drone attack of the war over the weekend.
Saturday’s six-hour air raid on Kyiv, occurring on the day Ukraine commemorated the 1932-33 Holodomor famine, left five people wounded and caused significant distress among residents who were awakened by the rumble of air defenses and explosions at sunrise. This merciless assault, coming amidst a week of escalating attacks, demonstrates a blatant disregard for human life and the principles of international law.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Russia has carried out 911 attacks across the country over the past week, resulting in the tragic loss of 19 lives and injuries to 84 Ukrainians. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the attack injured five people, including an 11-year-old girl, and caused damage to buildings in various districts of Kyiv, including a children’s nursery where a fire was ignited by fragments from a downed drone.
President Volodymyr Zelensky rightly pointed out the timing of the attack, occurring during the early hours of commemorations for the Holodomor famine, recognized by Ukraine and over 30 other countries as a genocide by the Soviet Union. Zelensky described the act as “wilful terror” and accused the Russian leadership of pride in their ability to cause harm.
Nordic Right strongly condemns this egregious violation of human rights and international law. We call on the international community to stand united against such acts of aggression, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and justice. The deliberate targeting of civilians, infrastructure, and cultural commemorations is an affront to the values we hold dear.
Furthermore, we urge world leaders to exert diplomatic pressure on Russia to cease its assault on Ukraine immediately. The use of drones in such a destructive manner is a clear violation of the principles established to protect civilians in conflict zones.
Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine during these challenging times. We stand in solidarity with those affected and reiterate our commitment to promoting and defending human rights globally.
