At Nordic Right, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. It is with deep concern and condemnation that we address the recent horrifying events in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Reports have confirmed that at least five people were wounded in the largest drone attack witnessed in the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian officials revealed that more than 70 drones were fired overnight, causing widespread damage to various districts of Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rightly labeled the attack as an act of “wilful terror,” emphasizing the pride of the Russian leadership in inflicting harm.
The attack, utilizing Iranian-designed Shahed kamikaze drones, unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, persisting through the morning. The air raid warning lasted for six hours as waves of drones targeted different areas of the capital. Air force chief Mykola Oleschuk reported that, commendably, 71 of the 75 drones launched at Ukraine were successfully downed. The effectiveness of “mobile fire” units, strategically deployed to counter the threat, played a crucial role in this defense.
Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko, via Telegram, provided grim details of the aftermath, citing injuries to five individuals, including an 11-year-old girl, and extensive damage to buildings across the city. Tragically, a downed drone sparked a fire in a children’s nursery, underscoring the severe consequences of such attacks on civilian life.
The motivations behind this unprecedented drone assault remain unclear, but the potential targeting of critical infrastructure raises alarms. Ukraine has recently warned of Russia’s intentions to launch an aerial campaign aimed at dismantling its energy system, posing a grave threat to the well-being of the Ukrainian population.
Nordic Rights vehemently condemns this egregious violation of human rights and the blatant disregard for civilian lives. We call on the international community to stand united against such acts of aggression and to work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The use of advanced weaponry in densely populated areas only exacerbates the suffering of innocent people and violates the principles we hold dear.
As advocates for human rights, we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, urging the international community to take swift and decisive action to prevent further atrocities and bring those responsible to justice.
