Nordic Rights denounces Israeli strikes on Al Shifa, demands intervention

Today, we express our deep concern and condemnation of the ongoing crisis at Gaza’s main Al Shifa Hospital, where Israeli forces are closing in, endangering the lives of thousands seeking shelter, including patients and medical staff.

In a distressing turn of events, Al Shifa Hospital, a sanctuary for 15,000 people seeking refuge from the conflict, is now under threat, with conditions worsening as fuel reserves run out, jeopardizing the lives of infants in incubators. The recent air strike on the cardiology ward and the surrounding areas, coupled with the targeting of displaced persons within the hospital, has led to a grave humanitarian situation.

Reports from Doctors Without Borders and the World Health Organization confirm the tragic loss of lives, including two infants in the neonatal clinic, and warn of the potential for more casualties due to lack of water and medical supplies. The continuous attacks on hospitals in Gaza have drawn global condemnation, with Israel’s justifications raising concerns about breaches of international humanitarian law and the principle of proportionality.

Nordic Rights emphasizes that the ability of hospitals and medical facilities to operate is paramount, especially during conflicts. We echo the World Health Organization’s call for the protection of all medical facilities, personnel, patients, and the wounded in adherence to international humanitarian law.
