Nordic Rights Condemns Ongoing Human Rights Crisis in Sudan

At Nordic Right, we are committed to advocating for and upholding human rights across the Nordic Region and beyond. Today, we stand united in condemnation of the horrifying human rights violations unfolding in Sudan, as reported by the United Nations and the UN refugee agency.

Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, expressed her profound concern, stating, “We keep saying that the situation is horrific and grim. But frankly, we are running out of words to describe the horror of what is happening in Sudan.” The reports indicate unrelenting and appalling incidents of sexual and gender-based violence, enforced disappearance, arbitrary detentions, and grave violations of human and children’s rights. The situation is described as verging on “pure evil,” with disturbing reports of young girls being raped in front of their mothers.

The conflict, which has been ongoing since April, involves forces loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commanded by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. Disturbingly, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has pointed to reports of over 800 people killed by armed groups in Ardamata in West Darfur, an area that had previously been less affected by the conflict.

“We have received these reports from new arrivals in Chad, these are refugees fleeing the Darfur area, that are talking about armed militia going from house to house killing men and boys,” said UNHCR spokesman William Spindler.

The situation in Ardamata is dire, with extensive looting reported, including the destruction of nearly 100 shelters in a camp for internally displaced people. UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi echoed the warning of a potential repeat of the atrocities witnessed two decades ago during the Darfur conflict.

The conflict in Sudan has already claimed more than 10,000 lives, with over 4.8 million people displaced within Sudan and an additional 1.2 million forced to flee into neighboring countries, according to UN figures. Nordic Rights calls on governments, humanitarian organizations, and concerned individuals to join us in demanding an end to the violence, accountability for the perpetrators, and the urgent protection of the rights and lives of the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
